Eskom halted its nuclear bidding programme for Nuclear -1 in December last year. Now, due to amendments to the environmental legislation, which are in progress, Eskom has applied to Water and Environmental Affairs to sequentially construct three nuclear power plants.
frightening - not only is nuclear power clearly no answer to climate change (climate chaos!) it is also an entrenchment of monopoly, just when we need as many and as varied sources of energy as possible... maybe people will read the document on Micropower from the Worldwatch Institute? not a new document, but a good indicator of what is possible...
I also hear a new housing development is planned inside the 16km radius. It was reported as 'Ok' because its outside the 5km evacuation zone. Can someone explain to me what the reasoning is, that some sort of accident might affect someone 4.9km, but not someone who is 5.1km away?? With a howling North Westerly wind, anything airborne could certainly be carried more than 5km surely?
indeed.... during research done during my tenure in the Nuclear Energy Costs the Earth Campaign, we discovered that the impact is wide indeed, and it was found that 50km radius is a fair assessment of impact, for example, along roads... and windspeed and direction obviously refer... the analysis for Pelindaba showed that we would have a few hours to evacuate Johannesburg in case of an accident - never going to happen!! and the last time there was an exercise around Koeberg, they got the wind wrong, and drove everyone INTO the plume!!
so anyone who tells us any such zone is safe, they must have a vested interest...
What is frightening is the level of plain ignorance that hides behind "scientific erudition". So very little is actually known about the effects of nuclear and the developers are relying on apathy to move ahead and leave us with the consequences.
The bottom line is that nuclear power will bankrupt the country, as it has nev er been accurately costed any where in the world and has always overrun and under delivered. We need to oppose the developments and bring as many objections in as possible. Perhaps a petition on avaaz.org to sent to the Minister?
