To really make a difference in reducing our energy needs we have to make much more radical lifestyle changes than just learning to flick a switch when we don't need a room to be illuminated.
Everything we consume needs energy in it's manufacturing and supply process and purely shopping in large malls that require stupendous amounts of energy for air-conditioning, lighting and displays makes me a much bigger consumer of energy.
Large glass and steel skyscrapers has the biggest energy needs as these materials offer little insulation from the heat and cold on the outside and living or doing business from structures like these is at best extravagant.
This only some examples of how our energy demands is not only centered around our living and workspaces but almost every aspect of our consumerist life demands it.
Muna is very correct at pointing out that before erecting a wind generator we need to first find ways of reducing our energy needs.

Well said Muna and Eric, a good reminder to 'mind' our usage... be aware, get out of those indulgent habits. Would appreciate a copy too please Muna - thank you... angie@envirochild.org

Thanks, Eric... boring when we are in total agreement, hey? :-) but if it will help at all, I have written a short illustrated document outlining our options energy-wise.. as a fan of "copyleft" as opposed to copyright, anyone who would like an electronic just needs to ask!!
kind regards

Muna

Hi Muna, welcome to our group. You are absolutely right I also believe the cheapest energy is the energy you don't use.
Energy efficiency is the key at the moment but there will come a time, I believe, when we will need to take more responsibility for our energy production (or conversion if you want semantics :-)) and then we will need to asses what renewable resources are available in our immediate vicinity.
In the mean time we have to reduce the amount of energy it takes to maintain our current way of life and then when we need to power our communities from the sun or the wind or whatever our energy requirement will be far less onerous.
Nice comment Muna

energy is very much flavour of the day, given Eskom's song and dance in the field recently... may I suggest we also concern ourselves about our consumption? demand side management is the cheapest and quickest solution!!
